Featherbed Island House is designated by the state of Maine Department of Environmental Protection as an "ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER IN GREEN LODGING".  We are striving (and always improving) to tread lightly on the environment that we are priviledged to share.  We have recycling bins and encourage recycling by all of our guests.  We have a compost bin in the yard, which is used to fertilize the gardens.  We do not use pesticides on our yard or garden and instead plant herbs and greenery that naturally repel pests and mosquitos.  Our recent paint job was done using low-VOC paints.

Inside the house, we use as few chemical cleaners as we possibly can (Vinegar is an amazing ingredient).

Ecofriendly laundry detergent is provided for guest laundry, as well as dryer balls in lieu of dryer sheets.  As we replace lightbulbs, we are replacing them with LED bulbs.  We know there is more we can be doing, and we will continue to implement new strategies as they become available and feasible.

Our property is also certified as a backyard habitat.  Knowing that our property is within a Maine shorebird critical habitat zone and watching the abundant wildlife outside the windows  - the heron and deer that visit the backyard pond daily, the birds that migrate past our windows, the seal that frolics in the bay and the resident eagles, we can't imagine doing anything to harm their habitat.
